Safram's expertise is based on the
long experience of Mr Mikko Nykyri, acquired in multi-disciplinary research and
development programmes concerned with the safety of radioactive waste disposal,
the development of final repositories for radioactive waste, and the planning
of the decommissioning of a power plant. In particular, this experience
includes a key role in the development and implementation of a repository for
low- and medium-level radioactive wastes from the design to the operational
phase.
Generally, the scope of the Safram's
skills include consultancy on
- the disposal of
radioactive wastes; and
- the
decommissioning of nuclear power plants.
More specifically, the activities
best supported by the existing experience are associated with
- development and
implementation of disposal systems;
- planning of
decommissioning;
- planning and
implementation of research programmes;
- strategic planning
and reviewing of the waste management systems; and
- participation in
the RTD programmes of the European Commission.

RETROCK was a project on the treatment of geosphere
retention phenomena in safety assessments. It was funded by the European
Commission within the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Atomic Energy
Community and co-ordinated by Safram. |

VLJ Repository
is a final disposal facility for low- and medium-level reactor operating
waste. The facility is owned and operated by Teollisuuden
Voima Oy (TVO), and located at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant site. Mr.
Nykyri has played key roles in the design of the facility, in its safety
research and design of its future extension. |

TVO launched a
Large-Scale Gas Generation Experiment in 1997 to investigate the gas
generation from the low-level maintenance waste disposed of in an underground
repository. The experiment has provided outstanding results and is still
running. |
Posiva Oy is the Finnish nuclear waste
management company that is responsible of the final disposal of spent nuclear
fuel from the Olkiluoto and Loviisa power plants. |
